The birth of modern art can be traced all the way back to the Industrial Revolution, which lasted from the 18th to 19th century. During this time, radical and rapid changes in manufacturing, transportation and technology profoundly affected the social, economic and cultural ways of life in Western Europe, North America and later the world. Prior to the 19th century, artists were typically commissioned to make artwork by the wealthy, or by institutions such as the church. As such, much of the art created during that time depicted religious or mythological scenes or told stories to the viewer.

During the 19th century, many artists started to make their art about people, places or ideas that interested them. Many artists also started to explore dreams, symbolism and personal iconography as avenues by which to depict their subjective experiences. Artists began experimenting with color, non-traditional materials, and new techniques and mediums.

Movements that are often associated with Modern Art include Impressionism, Cubism, Bauhaus, Surrealism, Futurism, Pop Art and Op Art to name a few.

The 1880s and 1890s, however, marked the beginning to the poster craze – the colorful, large billboards were euphorically greeted as “Art of the Street” and as such, were suited to raise art appreciation among the masses. Newspaper critics of the era thoroughly discussed poster art: the use of color, the composition and the drawing itself. Yet, the product was deemed secondary. Paris was the center for poster art. It is from Paris that it would spread to Europe and the United States. Here, poster designers were honored in public exhibitions and were greeted as artists of a new era. In the early 1890s, the poster discovered Art Nouveau, an ornamental style that flourished between 1890 and 1910. Meanwhile conventional graphic ideas still dominated walls in most other European cities. Poster art would continue beyond Art Nouveau through World War I, where it would become one of the most powerful propaganda tools, and into the Art Deco realm.
