Pop art is a movement that originally emerged during the mid-1950s in Great Britain and made its way over to the United State later on towards the late 1950s. Pop art challenges the traditions of fine art by including images from popular culture such as advertising, posters, news clips, cartoons, famous celebrities, etc. Pop art is all about using the characteristics of mass culture to create something unique. The style allowed artists to take mundane objects and images from pop culture to create something unique and significant. Other famous artists who took part in the pop art movement include Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Dine, Tom Wesselmann, Jasper Johns and many others.

Andy Warhol took art classes all throughout high school at the Carnegie Museum as well as art classes offered by his school. He was always somewhat of an outcast during his school years because he was a quiet individual. Warhol could always be found with a sketchbook in his hands. He also enjoyed going to the movies and collecting celebrity memorabilia such as autographed photos. He used items from this collection later on in his artwork.

Andy Warhol decided to try out pop art in the 1960s and eventually grew to be one of the most influential pop art artists of his time. Initially he had a hard time deciding what to pain and started out with Coke bottles and comic strips, but he wasn’t happy with the low amount of attention his work was receiving. A friend of his told him to paint what he liked most in the world and that is when Warhol began painting the Campbell’s soup cans. An Andy Warhol Screen Print for Sale can cost anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to upwards of a hundred thousand dollars. Warhol’s first exhibition in an art gallery was in 1962 at Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. At his first exhibition he presented an individual canvas of the 32 types of Campbell’s soup cans and he sold all of the paintings as a set for $1,000.

Warhol experimented with a wide range of mediums and styles such as silk screening, making movies, advertising, magazine publishing and other forms of artistic expression. When Warhol discovered the process of silk screening he immediately began creating paintings of celebrities. The silk screening technique allows artists to use a specially prepared section of silk as a stencil, which allows one silk screen to create similar patterns multiple times. Andy Warhol used this technique to create a large collection of Marilyn Monroe paintings. Warhol enjoyed using this technique so much that he used the style for the rest of his life and career.

Throughout his career Warhol made movies, worked in advertising, created timeless pieces of art, published a magazine and changed the art world with his influence. Warhol unexpectedly passed away in 1987 for unknown reasons at the age of 58 after a routine surgery. His influence and his art continue to live on and inspire new and upcoming artists.
